As though emerging through the mists of Scottish history, the Pipes and Drums of the 48th Highlanders capture the essence of their military heritage. Founded in 1891, the band has traveled Canada, the United States, Bermuda, and Europe, bringing its rich sound to military performances and concerts, including The Ed Sullivan Show and every opening hockey game for the Toronto Maple Leafs since 1931. With many awards under their belts and long-standing regard and recognition, the 48th Highlanders -- a perennial favourite at the Games -- are an experience that cannot be missed. Established in 1863, the Band of the Royal Regiment of Canada has reached fame and recognition on an international level. Their reserve unit actively serves overseas in the Canadian Forces and this military aspect of the band shows itself in their discipline, training, and professional, polished sound. This has been captured in three recordings now and can also be experienced in their live show which has been performed for the British Royalty, broadcast on television, and displayed in various other commitments all over the world. Now they are returning to Fergus for a show that cannot be missed. The Loyalist Fife and Drum Corps from Prescott Ontario represents a period in Ontario's history during the Revolutionary War around 1773. Accompanying them will be soldiers with muskets and uniforms from that period. The fife and drums were used to signal when the soldiers were to advance, fire and/or retreat. It should be interesting at twilight to see them fire these weapons with plenty of flames and smoke. A good demonstration as Canada becomes a nation. The MacNaughton Highlanders is from Milton, Ontario and will be competing the next day in Grade 2 band competition. MacNaughtons are unique in that they not only put on a good, solid, pipe band performance but they then move on to integrate a drum kit, electric guitars and even a break dancing piper in the most high-energy show you can imagine. In addition to our featured bands, we are also proud to present Fergus' own Fergus Pipe Band and Grand Celtic Pipe Band. Appearing as a colour party will be the cadets (12 to 18 years) of the 89 Ajax, a Guelph based sea cadet corps; 1882 Wellington Rifles, a Guelph based army cadet corps; 121 Red Arrow Squadron, a Guelph based air cadet squadron; and Achilles Navy League, a Guelph based corps featuring cadets from ages 10 to 12.
The show starts at 6:30pm with the twilight concert featuring Poor Angus.
