Sunday at the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games is filled with the stuff good Scottish festivals are made of - fabulous live music, outstanding Highland dancing, phenomenal Heavy Event competitions and breathtaking piping! And there’s more… Be here Sunday for the Kirkin ‘O’ the Tartan. Introduce your children to the Heavies in the Children’s Heavy Events Training School and participate in the Highland Games 10km Run.

Sunday is a great day to attend as the celebration of all things Scottish continues on!

Your Sunday Day Pass and Weekend Pass provide access to the entire Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games on Sunday, August 15, 2004 including all competitions, concerts, live music and tents. Check the Highland Herald for the events schedule. The following is a schedule of the events and activities for Sunday. Events, times and locations are subject to change.

 

Schedule of Sunday Events and Activities

Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games have an astounding variety of venues and activities available. Visit the Genealogy and Education Centre sponsored by TD Canada Trust, the CH TV Heritage Tent, the Children’s Interactive Area sponsored by Pizza Pizza, the Rowe Electric Avenue of the Clans, the Dry Stone Wall Construction site, the John Allan Cameron and Friends Tent and Nexan’s Tea Garden. Also, David R. Ross, best-selling Scottish author in the Author Series sponsored by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation and the Grand River Raceway with be providing lectures and booking signings. When you’re looking for good drink and music, both can always be found in the Sleeman Highland Pub and the Upper Canada Piper’s Pub.

8:00am – Gates Open


8:00am to 10:00am, Unity Hall – Kinsmen Tartan Breakfast

With a full day of activities yet to come, no doubt you and your family wants to start it with a hearty pancake breakfast! If you missed partaking of the Kinsmen Tartan Breakfast on Saturday, this is your opportunity. For only $5.00 you receive this great meal without even having to lift a spatula. Children eat for $3.00 and drinks are $1.00. All proceeds from this tasty meal go to support the local Kinsmen Club.


9:00am Onward, Heavy Events Field – Canadian Open Women’s Championship and Master’s and Amateur Men’s Championship

The Heavy Events Competition at the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games attracts competitors and observers from around the globe. To see this event is to witness strength and poise as the athletes compete for Festival titles.

Sunday’s Heavy Events feature Professional Women’s Heavy Event Champion, Shannon Hartnet and Dr. Rev. Kevin Fast, Masters competitor and Guiness World Book of Records Holder plus Master of Ceremonies David Webster, “Original Strongman.”

Main Field – GSW Piping Competition

The piping competitions continue Saturday as the sounds of these traditional instruments fill the air. It is a powerful sight and sound. The Festival’s competition is produced in cooperation with the Pipers’ and Pipe Band Society of Ontario and is ranked as a “Championship Supreme Games.” Be here Sunday. There’s nothing quite like this competition.

Falconry and Sheep Dogs

These entertaining and educational shows will amaze children and adults alike. In the presentation by the Canadian Raptor Conservatory, you will see live demonstrations with these large and powerful birds, detailed displays and hear an in depth commentary with fascinating information you’ll be talking about for days.

Jim and Ruth Clark and their team of Champion Border Collies will entertain you with an amazing narrated demonstration of the instinctive herding abilities of this remarkable breed. Using voice and whistle commands to maneuver the dogs, Jim shows the serious business of herding Scottish Blackface ewes and lambs. Jim also works comical ducks around an obstacle course, showing the infinite patience it takes to move these obstinate fowl, while Ruth describes the play-by-play action.


9:00am Onward – Schneider’s Highland Dance Competitions

Schneider’s and the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games are very proud to host the World’s Largest Highland Dance competition with over 900 dancers under the age of 18.

Highland Dancing is an essential element of the Scottish culture and this is a fabulous opportunity to watch some of the very best dancers in Canada and in the world compete.

9:00am, Victoria Park – Fergus Highland Games 10km Run

The Fergus Highland Games 10km Run is a sanctioned event of the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games. This event is organized by the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington, an organization dedicated to helping thousands of local disadvantaged children.

The course winds through quiet, established neighbourhoods and along picturesque country roads in the beautiful Fergus and Elora countryside before returning to Victoria Park in Fergus. Race participants enjoy the support of the friendly neighbours cheering them on.

Participants, their families and supporters are also welcome to join us at the Festival all day Sunday following the race. The first 200 registered racers receive a free Festival day pass which allows access to all concerts, Highland Games competitions and all Festival events and activities. Join the fun!

10:00am to 11:00am and 2:00pm to 3:00pm, Main Field – Children’s Heavy Events Training School

Here’s an opportunity for your children to try their hand at their very own special Heavy Events Training School and we invite your children are invited to participate. Pint sized cabers, hammer throws, stones and wheat sheaves will be provided for the pint sized competitors. Bring your wee Scot to the Main Field on Sunday.

10:00am, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church – Kirkin ‘O’ the Tartan

This very traditional yet informal service with music and “Strupak” (tea, scones and conversation) is an important feature of the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games. The program includes Gaelic songstress and East Coast music sensation, Patricia Murray.

This event is held at:

1:30pm – Broadsword Dance Demonstration

While at the Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games, come see this demonstration of a traditional Scottish dance. Where else can you find people dancing with swords?
