CLAN KENNEDY: The family of KENNEDY is traditionally believed to be descended from the ancient EARLS OF CARRICK, and claim kinship to Robert the Bruce. They have been associated with the province of Carrick in South Ayrshire since the 10th century and have been in Galloway since the 5th century. The family is Ayrshire based. The Chieftainship was first granted to Rolannd de Carrick in 1256 and repeatedly confirmed to that family. It is well known that the old Celtic Chieftainship could only go to the male line which is one of the reasons the House of Lords in 1762 adjudged the title of Earl of Cassillis to Sir Thomas Kennedy of Culzean((Cullane) as heir-male to succeed David, the first Earl of Cassilis. He is a direct descendant of John Kennedy of Dunure. Also, Loch Doon Castle, originally held by the De Carricks was later cinfirmed in ownership to the Kennedys. Wearing our Crest-Badge with the Dolophin encircled by the buckle and strap identifies one who is a follower of the Chief of Kennedy. The clan motto is "Avis La fin", The Clan plant is Oak, The colours of the House of Cassilis are Royal blue annd Gold, referrinng to the time when Scotland and France were allies.
